“Thresholds to Unknown”

Suzanne Frazier and Barbara DeMarlie explore a painting landscape that is outside the realm of vision and perspective. Expressing through their unique styles, they inquire into spaces beyond words. Their combined 60 years of painting experience demonstrates the personal approach each painter continues to take beyond their former expressions. Looking towards the future, they stand on seasoned ground to express beyond where they have created before.

Solo Exhibition by Suzanne Frazier

As a Contemplative Artist, Suzanne Frazier’s oil paintings arise out of her meditative approach reflecting her exploration into a space deep inside her spirit. The paintings are a new territory for her inquiry and one she found fascinating as she progressed through the series of work. She shares her contemplation inviting the viewer into a new way of seeing.

The series of ten paintings arose after applying a pallet knife layer of thick paint to the canvas embracing a symbolic shape or landscape component. After the thick paint dried, Suzanne explored the application of paint with either a wet paper towel or her finger to create the illusive application of color. After layers of paint, the illusion of space emerged from the layers.

Suzanne Frazier combines a BFA degree in Studio Arts from the University of Colorado with a BA degree in Philosophy from Lake Erie College to create a philosophical/meditative approach to art making. In 2015, Suzanne published the book, Contemplative Art describing her meditative painting process and definition for contemplative art. Her work is in private collections in the United States, Canada, Japan and Europe. Her work can be viewed at https://suzannefrazierartist.com and on Instagram @ContemplativeArt

Solo Exhibition by Barbara DeMarlie

Barbara DeMarlie’s solo exhibition presents work that explores the threshold of consciousness and the imperceptible way in which one’s life turns. The paintings manifest mysteries that appear on the canvas, from the artist’s spirit into the artist’s hands. At this moment in time, she is one lone visual artist among many in the world expressing her belief that everyone has gifts and talents inside of themselves that the world has never seen, and may never see again after one is gone. She is inspired by the quote by Anne Truitt in Day Book"Life itself, a gift of grace for an unknown reason".

The paintings in this series are created with layers of oil glazes on canvas and board, along with mono-prints that are hand colored, and mixed media pieces on wood panels. The surfaces have been worked and reworked in a subtle dance, both pursuing formal elements and letting the artist 'get out of the way' until each piece tells a story.

Barbara DeMarlie earned a BA in Art and Secondary Education at Regis College. After taking time to raise a family she pursued a Graduate Degree in Art Therapy at The School of the Art Institute of Chicago. She has spent time as a resident painter at The Anderson Ranch in Snowmass Colorado and recently worked at the Ballinglen Arts Center in County Mayo, Ireland. Barbara is a member Boulder Open Studios, Osmosis Gallery in Niwot, and the Colorado Women's Caucus for Art.  Her work can be viewed at:  https://www.barbarademarlieart.com and on Instagram @bdemarlie.

Gallery Hours: Thursday Noon to 5pm, Friday Noon to 9 pm, Saturday Noon to 5 pm, Sunday 1 pm to 4 pm. The last Sunday of each Month, 11 am to 4 pm for “Sundays on Santa Fe”.
